I've read this as well as some of John Harrison's work(https://www.mnsu.edu/comdis/kuster/Infostuttering/Harrison/john.htm this speech transcript i highly recommend). They made an impact on me in that they gave me hope, which is something stutterers who desire to recover should have. Although it has been a while since i've read this book, here are some of the important things I can recall: 1. She believes that the disruption of speech is caused by over consious control. 2. Part of her recovery involves abandoning her previously beliefs about stuttering from her speech therapies(none worked for her). 3. I felt most of the section about how she arrived at the "zone" is written very vaguely, partly due to her frequent use of metaphoric language. I think both Mead and Harrison, in their work, try to convey the message that self-therapy is important and the your "psychological stuff" plays a big role in stuttering. For example, Mead expressed and addressed her feelings about stuttering through writing; Harrison, on the other hand, made self-obversations. One of Harrison's big idea(part of his infamous hexagon, see the speech i referenced) is that we stutterers seem to care too much about what others think of us; and in turn we develop this expectation that we have to speak well in front of others. When I did some research on this, I found that what he said is related to social anxiety, a problem that not just stutterers have. With that said, I suggest for those who don't haven't made any progress on improving your stammer, try tackling your social anxiety issue first(if you have it that is), it has definitely helped me a lot. However, both of them in their work never really provided a "scientific" explanation as to why their stuttering disappeared, hence why somepeople may feel skeptical. But then again, they are just sharing their recovery processes that actually worked for them. ps: first time poster, have been stalking this forum for a while to collect/hear people's experiences with stuttering. I've actually come up with a general probable theory on stuttering after reading about recoveries and situations where people wouldn't stutter. However I will keep it low until i know test it out on myself and hopefully work :) Stay strong everyone
