Overcoming stuttering with a breathing technique

Overcoming stuttering with a breathing technique Hi guys, I'd like to share something that recently helps me with stuttering, and it might be helpful for you as well. First, to explain my condition. I'm 35, and started having a stuttering problem in high school due to stress and, unfortunately, this stayed with me since then. My speech problem consisted in not being able to take out a single word on different occasions, I just couldn't say anything, like I've been left without a breath after a punch in the stomach. The worst part is that it could happen at any time, in any occasion, there wasn't a particular pattern for the occurrence of my stuttering, I couldn't say why is it happening. What I knew was that when it strikes, I panic and it becomes worse and worse. I guess all of you recognise the feeling. Anyway, recently I decided to practice reading out loud at home and trying to improve my speaking. When to stuck at random words, what I used to try to do was to take a breath desperately and ended up opening and closing my mouth like a fish outside of the water. Sorry, but can't find anything closer to what I look like when it happens. :))) However, by accident one time when I stuck on a word that I was reading, I took a short breath from the nose, and taking the breath out from the mouth the word came out effortlessly. Surprised, I tried this another times and found out that it actually works for me!! Afterwards, I applied this technique in my speaking with people from my environment to see if it works the same when I am not alone. And it worked guys. When I talk and the stuttering appears, I just make a quick pause, take a breath through the nose and continue while I breath out from the mouth. It doesn't make my speech entirely flawless, it's awkward sometimes when I pause, but is wayyys better than the panic that overtakes me in similar situations and makes me look like the fish I described before. Of course, my advice is not groundbreaking, I just wanted to share with you my experience. It might be helpful to some of you. 😊
