It is great that it seems to work for you. But, 'take a deep breath' is one of the most common myths about stuttering/stammering. It is neurological! Yes, a deep breath might give relief if you are all tensed up, but it will definitely not fix anything beyond that. \------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Addition after down-vote:* Down-vote me all you want, dudes. I have had a stutter since I was 12 years old and am now 51 years old. I should have a clue what I am writing about :) A lot of well-meaning people tell people who stutter to take a deep breath, as if that would help. The only thing that it will do is ease some of the tension, or it might even make it worse. It will DEFINITELY NOT **fix** a stutter! It is a [myth](https://www.stutteringhelp.org/five-myths-about-stuttering). In fact, it will probably make things worse. People who stutter will blame themselves for not pulling themselves together enough, not taking enough deep breaths, forgetting to speak slowly, for being so nervous, and all the other myths that surrounds this disability. You wouldn't tell a blind person to just take a deep breath and then they can see again, would you? :) And a deep breath will not rewire your brain and fix the neurological condition causing your stutter. You just have to learn how to live with it. A deep breath will maybe give you some relief / respite, if you're lucky, but that's all. Addendum: That doesn't mean that you can't use breathing as a way to control your stutter. That's perfectly fine! Applying a singer's technique to speaking definitely helps when you have a blocking stutter. That's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying that it will not fix the stutter. It can help to control it, and/or make it more fluent. That's a good thing.
