No problem! Something I've recently started doing in the last year or so is flat-out *telling* someone (be it on the phone, in person, on online dating profiles, whatever) that I stutter. Maddeningly enough, for me it's actually easier to talk after that, since a) the other person knows what's going on and b) you don't have to worry about "hiding" your stutter since you just told the other person about it. I would think that asking someone about the whole stutter thing in the first conversation would be fine, as the sooner you're both over that hurdle then the sooner the both of you can relax and feel more at ease.
