Hello👋 Just wanting to jump in the conversation with people like me who have had a life long stutter. Mostly just to tell my story and vent a little haha. 28 years old now. My parents say I started stuttering when I was 4. I also have 2 brothers that have struggled with a stutter. My older brother is practically fluent since around 18, while my younger brother, who passed away at 24, had a very very severe stutter. Goes as further evidence that stuttering is passed down genetically. My uncle also had a stutter until adulthood. I haven’t been as lucky as my older brother and uncle and I’ve never “grew out of it.” I would rate my severity at a 7 out of 10 at the moment. This is where it gets difficult for me to understand and wondering if anyone has had a similar experience. From 6th-10th grade, I was 100% fluent. I mean not a trace to the point where my close friends were asking if something was wrong with me when I just started stuttering one day. It resumed immediately after my dad got home from 2 tours in the Middle East. Like same day, I remember saying to my mom a more censored version of “WTF is this?” I have no idea why this triggered it again as my dad has always been an awesome father and still is now into adulthood, my best friend. So not like it was a bad figure coming back into my life or anything. I’ve always stuttered more around family and I’ve read some posts of people with the same experience, so maybe the close relationship has to do with this. Does anyone seem to have cycles of increases/decreases in fluency? When I was in college, I was able to manage to the point where it was a non issue with talking with professors, presenting in front of the class, simply saying my name, etc.. With my current fluency situation, there is no way I would’ve made it through the first semester before dropping out. I hope this is a cyclical deal and not a trend that stuttering worsens with age. I’ve recently started to experiment with medications to help with what I would say is most definitely stuttering induced anxiety/depression. Has anyone found any degree of success from medication/ supplements? I was in speech therapy for many years and not really interested in giving that another shot.. Anyways, I realize I’m just rambling on and this post has turned into an article, so I’m going to stop now haha. Glad we have a platform to connect with other people with similar struggles
