+1 to starting small! I also recommend setting small but very clear goals before pushing yourself into situations. Sometimes the goal can just be showing up. Other times it can be asking a question you'd normally wouldn't avoid. Whatever it is remember to judge your progress based on the goal, not on how you feel afterwards. Sometimes even showing up, showing stuttering, and accepting whatever feelings may come (including negative feelings!) is a worthwhile goal.
