How do y'all deal with roasts?

How do y'all deal with roasts? I got roasted hard last night and didn't quite know what to do or say without it coming off as awkward. I can control my stutter for the most part but man when it comes out while I'm roasting I effectively end up further roasting myself. It really sucks cause sometimes j have witty comebacks but besides one liners and obvious responses it's impossible. Everything is so off in terms of talking speed tonality and timing. What do you guys do in a roast and how do you respond to it?
