I’m a person who stutters AND speech therapist. Exposure therapy is not the only option, but the one that requires the least assistance and guidance from a professional. Things my clients do to make exposure easier: learning the facts about stuttering, acknowledging their true feelings towards their stutter and their total communication, and finally, purposeful stuttering in a controlled environment. Stuttering on purpose to someone you trust can help de-mistify the sensations during stuttering and help you experience them in a real setting without the panic setting in and preventing you from realizing the full body experience of what is happening. Finally, the first true exposure experience I like to advice is to “prank” call a pizza place. Act like you’re placing an order for your least favorite pizza, stutter a ton, and hang up before you finish the order. But that is the last step, lay good groundwork for yourself before you try to force yourself to be comfortable in public with your stutter. Remember, this isn’t just some quick skill you’re learning so you can speak. You are learning the huge human lesson of true self-acceptance. This is no small journey, and you’ll only get out what you put in. Good luck!
