It’s really okay for any of us to be offended by that, or any scene where stuttering is used for comedic effect. Just like it is okay for any of us to find it okay, acceptable, and even hilarious. However, stuttering’s main role as the punchline in Hollywood and television has gone on far too long. While even stutterers can usually find the humour in these kind of scenes, their insidious nature should not be overlooked. As stuttering is so often used by writers as a punchline, or as a lazy way to inject comic relief into a scene, it conditions viewers to view all stuttering as something which is comedic in nature. That is one of the reasons so many in society view stuttering not as an actual serious disability, but something at which it is acceptable to laugh or mock. I view comedy as one of our species’ most precious gifts, and for it to continue to flourish, comedians should receive certain allowances not extended to non-comedian members of society. However, I also believe that stutterers have been a go to as the butt of the joke for too long. Hollywood, television and all media needs to start treating stuttering with the same sensitivity they extend to other disabilities, and difficult matters affecting marginalized groups. We can’t expect to see any change in the way we are perceived by society as long as the media we all consume continues to use our struggle almost exclusively as a source for cheap laughs.
