The study they performed had two groupings, one was given vitamin b1 and the other a placebo. It was a double blind study so both the subject and the investigator weren't aware of this fact. Placebo group didn't show any improvements in their fluency so you can't say the 30% who did improve were just experiencing placebo effect.
