Stutter and SSRIs I wanted to put this out there in case anyone else wants to give it a try. My oldest son is 14 and a freshman in high school. He's had a severe stutter since 1st grade and he also has generalized anxiety issues. With the new pressures of being in high school, we decided to start him on a low dosage of Prozac. He's been on it a month now, and it's helped so much with his anxiety. Unexpectedly it's also helped a ton with his stutter. He's always stuttered very badly unless he's talking to a close friend or family member. He still stutters with friends and family, but its much more manageable and less frustrating for him. He's hardly stuttering with us anymore. Just small, barely noticeable blocks. He's told us that he's now able to start conversations with classmates and teachers without stuttering much at all. His exact words were that "it has been life changing". I don't know why it's helping his stutter. I know that when he's anxious his stutter is worse, but he stutters pretty badly even when he's not anxious. So I don't feel like his anxiety causes his stutter. Whatever it's doing to help him, I'm not going to complain. I just wanted to share our experience.
