Since this post has already been responded back to, I just wanna add my two cents in since I remember seeing this a while back, and heavily disagreeing with the comments here as a fan of the band and song. This is in no way to persuade people to liking it, nor to disregard any opinions made here about the song, just wanted to jump into the ring to give context behind the song and its meaning to clarify, and my opinion of the song too. The song is about being nervous in asking someone out on the dance floor. Josh (the lead singer of the band and writer of the song) wrote this based on his relationship at the time for disappearing and not being there in the relationship. The “stutter” being how despite fumbling, he still wants to go through with it and is trying to make up for it as much as he could. As someone who has a stutter, I love this song. I don’t really see the song as offensive. Throughout the song the protagonist gains ever more confident despite stuttering to his crush, and it is in no way making fun of people who have a stutter. The chorus is that of a confident retort- “Like yeah, I stuttered, you have a problem with that?” showing that he’s still nervous but confident in his actions despite it. Again, I understand why some people dislike Stutter and that’s fine. I just feel some of these comments are in bad faith to the song and the band without the proper context to understand the meaning behind it. Spectrum Pulse(music critic) did a write up of this waaayyyyy back in the day about this topic in particular if anyone wants a read. Though I feel he rambles a bit too much in examples that it feels he has forgotten the point of talking about the song, he does bring up good points that I agree with, so here’s the link. https://www.spectrum-pulse.ca/blog//2012/11/transgression-sensitivity-and-art.html
