It could get better. As a child I had a terrible stutter, mostly blocking, it really held me back at school but I always tried to not let my stammer isolate me from my piers. So I always tried my best no matter what. 46yrs on, I am a company director, I have a family, I am a pilot. I think my turning point in being able to speak with fluidity was in my mid 20’s, I decided to not word change in order to prevent a block but to allow the block to establish, then breathe, keep eye contact and then finish my word. At first it was hard, it became easier and now I would say 95% of the time I can hold a conversation in person or on the telephone without a single stammer. If I do feel a stammer, I just wait for it, pause, breathe and continue. I just want to give a little bit of comfort or reassurance to the community that with help, confidence and determination a stammer doesn’t have to be such a debilitating disability that so many people suffer from.
