Long term strategies I worked on were controlling my breathing while talking, forcing myself to make eye contact, speaking from my diaphragm if I’m speaking in a crowd or in a loud venue like a club or party. If I have to make a presentation or speech I will practice it, make it so it was almost like I was going to perform a song since singing triggers a different part of the brain that isn’t effected by a stutter. If I have a block that I can sense, I’ll substitute a similar word I know I wont block on. It’s also important to work on things not to do: Don’t force words out, that has always led to more stuttering for me. I pause, take a breath, even take a drink of water, anything to collect myself. Don’t speak into your chest (that’s where speaking from the diaphragm comes in, it almost forces you to raise your chin, some call it showing confidence). Don’t get discouraged, like I said earlier, speaking for us isn’t a natural process so we have to practice and hone our skills.
