Questionable Assignment Hello all, I'm a Graduate Student in a Speech Language Pathology Master's program. This term I'm taking a Stuttering course taught by a person who stutters and is a PhD in the topic of stuttering. I'm not a person who stutters. My professor assigned us a scenario where, in public, we must forcibly stutter in an unfamiliar setting. The purpose of this assignment is for us, the students, to experience (for just a moment) what a person who stutters goes through when stuttering with unfamiliar communication partners and discuss how we feel. I'm battling a great deal with this assignment because it feels innappropriate to me. I am a sympathetic, understanding person. The documentaries, podcasts, and articles I've seen, listened to, and read have stirred up intense feelings about the experiences of people who stutter. I understand the intent of the assignment but can't claim that this will help empathise as I truly do not have the ability to understand the challenges people who stutter face in everyday life. One voluntary interaction with the inclusion of a stutter is not a comparable scenario and it's a wee bothersome for me to fake a moment of stuttering. I would so appreciate thoughts on this from others. Thank you, all.
