Sometimes I find success by making my phrases more "musical." With practice, you can make it unnoticeable. I often find a rhythm and tap my foot, counting in my head, "1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4..." When I think of what I'm doing like a song, I can occasionally dodge a block. You could try holding tempo, tapping and keeping your count in mind. When called, substitute "here" for whatever beat you're on, only aloud. It's a weird trick, but I use it all the time.
