I can only speak for the anecdotes and advise I share, which also tends to be that you can do anything. I guess what I always mean is, you should at least **try**. It’s harsh, but we have to get use to rejection, and disappointment. I think your family is trying to tell you to put your best foot forward and let the company or police recruiter decide if they can’t find a place for you. I was a supervisor at a manufacturing plant during college. Struggled to talk over the radio, but they gave me a chance, let me get comfortable and became a bit more fluent at the job. Every new job after that I would go through a 3-month period from severe stuttering to moderate as I got comfortable.
