I'm an engineer (have my bachelors, working on my masters and doctorate) and if you're looking for a job that doesn't require communication, this is not it. It's not as much as a public speaker, but the stereotype that engineers are antisocial and shy is definitely not true. That being said, they should still go for it if it's something they're interested in!
