Medical SLP here! Have you stuttered since childhood? Are you having other new neurologic symptoms (I.e. speech changes, swallowing difficulty, balance or movement changes, headaches, visual changes)? What brought you to neurology in the first place? If your stuttering has recently begun or worsened (along with other neurologic symptoms) then I can understand why your neurologist would want an MRI to assess your brain. But if you’ve been a person who stutters since childhood, then it’s unlikely that imaging of your brain will 1. Show anything unusual at all and 2. Reveal any information that will help with your stuttering specifically. There are some great stuttering specialized SLPs out there! Adults can still really benefit from therapy (I know you mentioned your experience as a kid wasn’t great). Happy to try to find some resources or referrals in your area (or via teletherapy) if you’d like. Just can DM me or comment back with the area you’re in.
