It is a neurological disorder that also has genetic components. I have met people who stutter who have many siblings and/or parents who stutter. For me, no one in my family stuttered, but now my four year old nephew stutters. People who stutter are also more likely to have children that stutter. That is just a few bits of info I have picked up over the years from my speech pathologist.
