SSRIs are a medication class that are a daily long-term medication to decrease speaking anxiety. It has to be taken every day and you don’t feel the effects for 4-6 weeks. Celexa is the most effective for stuttering. For an as needed medication (which is probably best in your situation) I cannot recommend Propranolol enough. It’s a cardiac medication that forces your heart rate and BP to lower, causing you to not feel the physiologic effects of anxiety. Therefore, it improves your fluency. Propranolol is a safe medication (if you have no contraindications) and is commonly prescribed for performance anxiety. I use it a couple times a month when I have to give a presentation. I have also prescribed it for several patients in similar situations. It could be a great medication for you to tackle your oral exam. You should speak with your doctor to see if it’s a good option for you. If it is, try it before the big day to see how you respond. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
