It definitely happens to me when I'm speaking to someone I formally don't know. Telling someone my name has always been an issue growing up (I had difficulty with hard W's which conveniently is the first letter to my first name). It was always an awkward first impression after meeting anybody. To obtain a fresh start during my college years, I decided to use my nickname (beginning with an M) to introduce myself to avoid awkward beginnings. It worked for several years - up until recently. Now when they ask for my name - it doesn't matter if I use my formal name or my nick name. My stutter now intrudes most introductions.
