I’m a new onset stutterer and honestly don’t know much about therapy but I had my first evaluation with a therapist and she assessed the sitter plus the behaviors that I’ve begun to develop in borderline to break myself out of my dysfluencues. Because, as people have pointed out, the behaviors (I close my eyes, grimace, drop my head, move my hands, make fists, tense my muscles to the point that speaking for any length of time is exhausting) all these behaviors are dysfunctional copping mechanisms for me because they draw more negative attention to my stutter and make me feel more embarrassed. The therapist said she is going to help me learn how to reduce these behaviors and replace them with other skills to improve my fluency. I hope it works! Perhaps someone who’s worked with a speech therapist would be willing to comment on this in more detail?
