They may get really good at playing card games though. In all seriousness, you're right. A school SLP however can still be a positive presence and gives a kid an outlet and a chance to communicate in school when all other opportunities seem hopeless. I've done both. School SLP never helped me improved, but did help me get outside my comfort zone by making phone calls and encouraging me to do the spelling bee one year.
