Stuttering case between siblings Hello, I thought I would reach out on here to discuss my personal story about stuttering in my family. I want to see if there are any similar cases that I will describe that have been experienced in this community. Starting from the beginning, I have stuttered since I was 5 or 6 years old due to hearing loss when I was born. Developing language was hard for me because of this hearing loss, which resulted in imperfect speech. I have been in and out of speech therapy provided by my school district and by a private speech therapist. I did not receive private speech therapy until sophomore year of high school and only received speech therapy provided by my school district up to that time. I can go into detail with what I experienced with speech therapy if anyone is interested, but I'm trying to keep this part of the story short for this post. Long story short, my speech improved thanks to two private speech therapists I had in high school and college. Because of that I feel that I'm talking to more people and not hesitate to talk to family, friends, and coworkers from my job. In recent years, I have noticed that my only sister has developed a stutter similar to the one I had growing up. She initially would stutter around me and our parents. Then it started to get worse when she was stuttering more around me, our parents, her close friends, and family. She would be hesitant to talk with new people because of the stuttering similar to what I experienced. This case seems very weird because she showed no signs of stuttering until I started to improve my speech. She went through private speech therapy for less than a year and she improved then, and her speech started to sound normal again. Very recently, the stuttering started to happen again when she did not have a speech therapy session for a year. I noticed her stuttering again when I saw her for the holidays this year when she showed similar signs of stuttering that she had a year ago. She got really upset when she was talking to a family friend who we never met before, and she stuttered throughout the whole conversation trying to introduce herself to him. When I talked this person, I had no issues with my speech when I was introducing myself to him. Because of this incident, I wanted to make this post to see if anyone else has experienced this before. Whether it's growing up with someone like a sibling or a close friend who stutters or growing up with a stutter and growing up with a sibling or a close friend who accepts the stutter and showing signs of stuttering between one another. (I hope that last sentence makes sense.) If anyone has experienced this sort of thing or know anyone who has experience this, please share. Hope to hear responses soon. Have a happy new year. \-Charlie Clark
