Worst stutter coach ever. Please be aware of this dangerous mindset. I sought permission from a mod before posting this. I don’t intend to name and shame. Basically this guy on this subreddit claims to be a “speech coach”. Inspirational, right? Until he completely belittled me for stuttering. I never asked for his help or advice but he messages me to use the slide technique to stop stuttering of practically imposing his techniques upon me and telling me to check out the clients he supports when again, I never told him to help me out and I would rather trust a speech therapist with many years of experience and a phd in speech fluency and language. I tell him the slide doesn’t work for everyone. He asks me such an insensitive and unprofessional question of “Why do you even want to stutter?” No professional speech therapist or coach would and should NEVER ask such a leading negative question. This had me feeling upset and angry when there’s so many other conditions out there which impacts speech and for non-stutterers out there who are planning to have a child or have a stuttering child, please don’t make them feel ashamed for having a stutter when it’s people’s problem if they’re offended by the sound of stuttering. I ask him why can’t we just teach society to be kinder and patient with us. He tells me the slide technique is great because you wouldn’t want to be stuttering on your name for 10 minutes (felt like an over exaggeration to me) when I’m sure it only takes a couple seconds at most for someone to say their name. My therapist already taught me the slide technique and if this “coach” bothered to watch my vids in full then he would be really good at analysing this but again, he’s not professional with his practice. Sure, there’s stutterers who may be completely blocked on 10 minutes to just say their name but what’s the percentage of that happening? I’ve gone through speech therapy and from the start, my therapist is a kind and open-minded man with actual qualifications and is licensed and he would ask me neutrally at the start “What do you hope to gain from this? Just to let you know there’s no cure.” I explain to him it’s mainly to do with humiliation of people mocking me and he tells me not to give attention to the idiots when you wouldn’t befriend ignorant people and it’s no crime to stutter but he helped me with techniques anyways that it’s up to me to use them if I wish to as different people cope differently on what works for them or not. This is what an excellent speech therapist should make you feel as the end goal. My speech therapist was licensed, is a Dr, a uni lecturer and published a textbook on stuttering. So anyways, this unprofessional speech coach without the right qualifications or professionalism tells me all of a sudden “Oh you’re right, we should teach society to be kind and that stuttering is no problem” but he literally contradicted himself by asking me a minute ago “Why do you even want to be stuttering?” Some people choose not to ever take speech therapy as their stutter has taught them to be empathetic and patient with other people’s speech mobility struggles such as brain traumas, learning disabilities, Parkinson’s, etc. He ends up blocking me on Instagram as I called him out on his contradicting bullshit and forcing his help on me I never asked for. In conclusion, please don’t ever feel ashamed for stuttering when it’s society’s problem and filter the ignorance when you would be kind and sensitive to other people’s conditions. By all means, do techniques to manage your stutter but only if you want to, just don’t be fooled by an unprofessional individual who claims to be a coach with this disgusting, egotistic and forceful attitude. Fuming! Rant over.
