Hey, friend! We’ve all been there. Let me say this; a lot of the time we have to be our own advocates. Something that I learned is that the more I lean into being open and upfront about my stutter, the more capable I seem to employers. Something I often tell employers is that I would appreciate the time and patience to let me finish sentences. That shows them I’m confident in my abilities and am able to support myself! I was hired as a special ed teacher recently, and my hiring coordinator made a note that seeing me talk optimistically about my stutter and seeing it as a strength rather than a weakness was inspiring. There’s always going to be prejudice out there. But I’m slowly learning that most people just want to see the real you. And if the real you stutters, that’s perfectly fine. In fact, it can help you stand out.
