I returned to speech therapy. Same program and therapist that I had in my teens. Where I had limited success in my teens. The main difference was likely my maturity and effort. In my teens, as much as I wanted to be fluent, I wasn't putting in the work when it came to my fluency. And as I sit here responding, IDK how much I really wanted to be fluent in my teens. Sure, if asked "would you like to get rid of your stutter?" who wouldn't respond "yes." But did I believe I could? There are points in your life where you believe you can't change. That your stutter is permanent. I started my first white collar professional job when I was about 24. Within the first year or so, I decided to go back to speech therapy. For the first time in my life, I was making the decision to get fluent on my own. Parents weren't driving me or paying for it. This was all me. And I did the work. I practiced every day. It's amazing the progress you can make when you dedicate yourself to working a program and improving. My speech therapy was a very private affair. I was developing my fluency behind closed doors. An hour or two a week at the therapist's office. And my daily exercises. On average, 15 or 20 minutes a day, twice a day. When it came time to start using my fluency in public, I was prepared. My therapist made a point of me not using my fluency in public until I was ready. And then, only on a limited basis. I would take my successes and failures back to the office, and we'd analyze and make any necessary corrections. e.g. Use your fluency three times over the next week and we'll discuss at our next session. Nowadays, my fluency is the norm. I don't think about my fluency or stuttering as I live my life each day. If you're interested, read my comments throughout the following couple of threads... I get into more details about my speech therapy experiences.
