I would say that most of us are in our heads most of the time. Since I sometimes find difficulty speaking, I retreat inward. I would not make us some flamboyant frat guy, because that’s not us. We also try our best to hide our stutter. For example, I love texting, as when I actually speak, I sound like absolute trash. I’d make this “hiding a secret” aspect a key detail about the character. I would also say that we try not to make a big deal about our stutter. People usually figure it out quickly so saying anything about it seems redundant. Finally, we love to educate non-stutterers on stuttering (or at least I do)! Nothing brings me more joy than for someone to show genuine interest in my stutter. Here are some things to avoid. I would advise not to make a Porky Pig esque character. Stuttering on every single word is not realistic. I would sprinkle stutters in; be liberal with them. We sometimes don’t stutter at all. When we don’t stutter in a sentence, it’s honestly the best feeling. I would also avoid making his/her stutter the only unique quality. We can be unique in many different ways. For instance, I’m a huge space nerd at heart and I love looking through my telescope. I don’t let my stutter define my personality. TL;DR: Do NOT look to Porky Pig for any inspiration! I cannot stress this enough! I love seeing people nowadays make characters who stutter. Although I feel as if we’re underrepresented, I’ve seen people put in great efforts to make a genuinely realistic stutterer in their stories and it definitely shows. Thank you so much for your interest! Tell me when you finish your novel so I can buy a copy!
