I am a native english speaker and studied Japanese in japan for several months about 10 years ago. I think we have a similar level of speech-fluency based on your description of your stutter. I can briefly summarise my experience as: \- The other non-native Japanese speakers that I was studying with seemed relatively open minded (perhaps assumed given they had come to a foreign country to learn about its language/culture), and gave me time to speak and did not make an issue of my stutter. I disclosed my stutter to some of the people that I was with as I felt that made my experience less difficult. \- My japanese speaking teachers could see that speaking Japanese was difficult for me and applauded my continued efforts to learn the language and (at least seemed) to simply accept I took longer to speak. \- Other native Japanese speakers often seemed to interpret my difficulties as "simply" a foreign speaker that was struggling with the language as any other non-native speaker may struggle. Some did not give me enough to speak, seemingly out of an effort to help me WITH THE LANGAUGE, or (perhaps instinctively in situations like this) offered to speak in English. I only had one "negative experience", but this was because I got frustrated that someone refused to speak Japanese with me because they thought I was unable to communicate in the language (even though I assured them I could). This was a misunderstanding. Admittedly, I avoided many scenarios where I thought I would have difficulties, but equally - going to study abroad puts you in enough situations where you have to speak, so I feel that I had enough speaking interactions such that my experiences are hopefully somewhat indicative. People seemed much more interested in me, and in knowing how a 6ft white Japanese speaking englishman had found his way into situation X or Y, than they were about my stutter. Congratulations on taking the no doubt very daunting decision to study abroad, and good luck.
