In the burning bush story Moses says he doesn’t want to lead the Israelites to freedom because of his speech. He thought no one would take him seriously. God responds by saying “Who gave people speech? Who made them blind or seeing, deaf or hearing? Is it not I? Now go forth and lead my people.” To me, the underlying message is that God gives us struggles to be great because of them and not despite them. When I had my Bar Mitzvah, my mom shared a letter with me from someone else who stuttered recalling when they were getting ready for theirs. They had a particularly hard rehearsal when the cantor said, “God is happy with my prayers whether I sing in tune or not, and God is happy with your prayers whether they are fluent or not.” You got this! And if you feel like God doesn’t have your back, know that we do!
