I've only ever been teased or mocked about my stutter two times. I'm only 23 so maybe I've got plenty coming my way, but yeah first time was in highschool. The second and third were both at places of employment. As i said above the first time I was in highschool. It was an Australian private boys school btw, and here we had somethimg called PC classes. These are groups of about twenty students, 4 from each grade, with one teacher in the same class room each morning and afternoon of a school day. Each student takes it in turns to read school notices in the morning and as you could guess, i had a stuttering episode. Now on this day we were fortunate enough to be hosting another class whose teacher was absent. Anyways, as i was reading and stuttering one of the guys from the other class gave me the typical "t..t..today junior." Ill admit something clicked in me and i may have overreacted, but the result was incredibly satisfying. I calmly put the paper down. Stood up, turned around, grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him to the front of the room. I threw him against the wall and hit him with a flat palm in the ribs. To this day i still remember the sound of his coughing and wheezing. He was rolling on the ground for a good 20seconds. I hadnt seen it then but some friends from my class had stopped and held back people from the other room who tried to help the guy I hit, and our teacher didnt even put down his coffee. I can't remember what i said but it something like "who cant talk now" 2 days later, the guy came up to me and apologised. I of course had to deal with some consequences but that was incredibly satisfying. The second time I was working at a newsagency which specialised in lottery sales. On this particular day it was very busy and I as working with a manager and a couple other counter jockeys. I was working through the queue of customers when I noticed the guy in front of me was a regular, he would come in almost everyday and buy high tier lotto entries each time. I put his order through with all due pleasentries, and came to giving him his change and tickets. I stuttered heavily over a couple tries at the same sentence, eventually moved on and just gave him his change, but he said along the lines of "Come again. I didn't get that" in a very m9ck8mg tone. I replied clearly, slowly and loud enough for all the customers to hear as I wanted him to feel bad. "Mate, I've been bullied, made fun of, teased and mocked. But noone had ever gone so low as to insult me about something I can't control." At this point I could have stopped there but I went further. "Now if you have some spare time between your gambling addiction and using money you could spend on your family, please leave this store." He was visibly stunned and silent. I looked behind him, people were smiling. Some with approval, some respect other were just tired about being kept waiting. My boss wasn't pleased at all, but my manager co-workers and some customers all expressed their approval for me sticking up for myself. So my response to your question would be. Never let people walk over you. Always stick up for yourself. If you want to respond to these taunts do it calmly and in front of others. You have to make those mocking you never want to again. Make them understand that behaviour is low and has no place in your life and your stutter is beyond your control. Good luck. Edit: oh and if they do apologise, never say "Its ok" or "dont worry about it" instead say "apology accepted." You want them to understand that it was wrong, and not something which can just be dismissed.
