Taken it seriously as a problem. I grew up in the 70s/80s, when there probably wasn't as much understanding about it. Both of my parents seemed to think that I just needed to slow down, take a breath, and that I'd 'just grow out of it'. (Spoiler: I didn't.) I think this is why I became so covert, and would do anything rather than expose my stutter. I've never had speech therapy, so I can't say how helpful I would have found it -- but at least maybe I'd have felt like my parents took it seriously and didn't think it was a personal failing on my part. Given the era, I don't really blame them, but it was hard. You sound like awesome parents, btw.
