Interesting thought and you may have something there. My experience is that stuttering is a neurological problem caused when the brain and the stutterer's voice do not interact in unison. When one does not hear their own voice, they usually are much more fluent. This explains why a stutterer will have an easier time when they whisper, sing, use a falsetto voice, or speak in unison with others. This also explains why programs such as McGuire which change your breathing and voice are often successful. This also explains why prosthetics such as the Edinburgh Masker (which masks out your voice) and Delayed Auditory Feedback (where you hear your voice a fraction of a second after you speak) are so successful. This also explains why standard stuttering therapy, which does none of these things, is often a failure.
