This happened to me too. I was born in 1982 and when I was of school age my stutter was quite bad. I was always put into all of the lower groups in school as they thought I couldn't read properly etc. By the time I took exams and left high school I got A and B grades in English language and English literature. So clearly I wasn't as dumb as they thought.
