When somebody says the word that I’m trying to say then somehow I’m usually immediately able to say the without without a problem. So him saying the word after you said it may not have necessarily meant that he didn’t want you to say it, although as you said lots of people don’t like it when people guess the word they want, so be cautious until you’re sure that he does or doesn’t mind it.
