Yeah, u/MandalaGold, what you're doing here isn't actually "coping". It's *evading*. Very common as a coping *mechanism*, of course, but contrary to the positive connotations of that notion, it's best thought of as a bad habit. It does indeed require cognitive overhead - which ought instead to be avoided. You could sort of say that we need our strength for the actual stutter itself. - Incidentally, this was exactly why I asked in the first place, because from my own experience, I know this can be taxing. That's why I actively stopped doing it. :)
