When people say we should not challenge “poor me” attitudes about stuttering, they are basically saying we should let the bully win. If someone mocked you for your stutter, you would stand up for yourself. You would not let them define your worth. But when you sit in self-pity and tell yourself your life is ruined, you are doing the bully’s job for them. You become your own bully. Refusing to challenge that mindset is not kindness or empathy. It is enabling. Real support means helping someone fight back against that inner bully and rebuild self-respect, not sitting quietly while they tear themselves down. I don't tell anyone to 'suck it up', I'm advising people to take real action to change their life instead of just complaining. I'm fighting back against the bullies inside of some of us.
