I have to agree with how true this is. I've been to a few conferences and the "most therapists don't understand stuttering" is a common theme, unfortunately. I say unfortunately because I'm studying speech therapy and it's shitty realizing how incompetent speech therapists can be. I think it has to do with the fact we only get one class on fluency during grad school. 🙄 I'm super thankful to have a professor that's actually a specialist and has dedicated her entire career to. She has discussed everything you listed above. Some therapists just want to work on the actual stuttering, but it's so much more than that. Seems like your later therapist actually knew some things.
