Hi! I’m 29, female. The way you describe your stutter sounds just like me. And the way you went to therapy as a kid, and then didn’t touch it for years, is also the same as me. I hid my stutter so well that my boyfriend was genuinely surprised when I finally “came out” and told him about it. Telling him, and being more open about it in general, has really helped my anxiety about stuttering. I used to to WHATEVER it took to hide it, which usually meant lots of “uhh crap what’s that word?” (Basically stalling a block). Telling more people lifted a weight about it and I get less frustrated than I did before. I also started taking an anti-depressant about 6 months ago. I started taking it for PMDD (like, intense PMS), but I’ve noticed my anxiety has dropped to basically 0 and I stutter far far less than I used to. It’s helped me become more confident at work, so much so that I’ve gotten two promotions in these past 6 months. I 100% attribute this to the meds. This has been a game changer, and I hope the effects stick. Not recommending you go and get on drugs if you don’t need them, just telling you what’s worked for me. Good luck! Keep us updated on what you find.
