This is a very interesting article and wonderfully worded opinion piece. What the writer lacks in evidence based research, he makes up for in poignant anecdotes. I trust his motives are for the best but some of his arguments are very problematic. I think he is well within his rights to eschew a "Cure". But to equate stammering with deafness, or autism, or other permanent disabilities is extreme I think. 1. Autistic people dont grow out of autism. No adaptation in the world will make it truly easier for severely autistic people to function and thrive. Neurotypical people should not "have to accommodate" people who are violent and aggressive. Nobody should be put in that situation regardless of the value of a disabled life. We all matter, equally. No one matters more. These are the musings of a person who has never seen a family ravaged by severely autistic or mentally ill family member. 2. Most forms of permanent disability confer far more suffering from comorbidities than the one you see. People in wheelchairs are at risk for blood clots, stokes, heart attacks, illeus, diabetes and early death and no amount of societal accommodation is going to change that. Simply being unable to walk cuts years off ones life span. Most disabilities are like this as is stuttering (depression, anxiety, suicidality). 3. Giving parents the choice to not have a disabled child is about the rights of the parent, usually the mother who is the one tasked with looking after most disabled children. Both neurodivergent and neurotypical people have played a role in the development of science and humanity. To claim that all scientists and inventors were autistic is a bit insane. And to claim that social behavior, sharing ideas, and working together as group, and connecting with each other is not as important raw fixation and perseveration is obtuse. In all I think that the writer offers a new perspective that bears consideration. but that everything he says must be taken with multiple grains of sea salt. Its one thing to eschew a cure for yourself. its another to state that your way should be the only way and remove that same choice from millions of others by diverting funding.
