Totally agree with all of this. I work in marketing / advertising. This is a high stress job that has a big social aspect that involves drinking and sometimes drugs. My speech fluency is very much tied to my stress and anxiety. Similar to you, after work drinks with colleagues allowed me to feel normal. My stutter faded away after a few beers. But, the dread and anxiety I felt for a few days after a night out drinking made my stutter way way worse. I remember some absolutely BRUTAL presentations and phone calls at work where I could barely speak. It was actually pretty traumatic and it took me ages to become confident enough to present my work again without help from bosses and colleagues. Today, I try to be much more moderate with my alcohol intake. Exercise, and therapy has also helped. Self medicating for short term relief just isn't worth it anymore.
