Had a small win yesterday at work! Might be long, sorry in advance. Tldr at bottom. Been stuttering for about 15 years now. It comes and goes, but it's mostly tied to my anxiety disorder, and can get pretty intense fairly frequently. I was on a fairly long shift at the oil change shop. I was below the cars draining oil and whatnot while my coworkers were on the floor with the customers. We communicate via call outs to keep each other informed of where we are in the process and whatnot. I tend to butcher them pretty frequently, and am frequently reminded that my call outs are on the quiet side. Well, my coworkers on the floor were starting to joke around and get a little sass in their call outs by either jumping three or four steps ahead in the process right after one of my call outs, or by just repeating them over and over again. All in good fun, and no harm done, but I couldn't get a single snarky response back because I didn't want to stutter more than I needed to. Fast forward to someone asking "Ready for oil bay 1?" right above my head. I responded very loudly, very clearly, and without stumbling "Drain plug tight! Ready for oil bay 1!" In a snarky tone, he immediately calls out again "Ready for oil, bay 1?" Sometimes responses aren't heard because of air compressors, engines running, impact guns, etc. But I knew damn well my coworker heard my response. I break protocol and respond with "Did I stutter, bay 1?" absolutely loud and clear as day. Caught him off guard, and the poor, sweet guest wondered why the guy down below was an asshole. Team explained that I had a stutter, and that was the point of the joke. Felt like a million bucks for a minute. Tldr: Joking around at work, and landed a perfect "Did I stutter?" line.
