Stuttering is a neurological (physical) disorder where the brain's pathways become disrupted when hearing our own voice, Since stuttering is a physical disorder it can obviously be passed on just like bad eyesight and/or bad hearing. Also since stuttering is a physical disorder it explains why traditional stuttering therapy is often useless. Traditional stuttering therapy uses all sorts of techniques (breathing, pausing, easy onset, etc) that will never work with a physical defect. Stuttering is analogous to bad vision and/or bad hearing. When someone with bad vision/hearing seeks relief they get a prosthesis (eyeglasses/hearing aids). When someone with bad speech (stuttering) seeks relief they get speech therapy which often does not work. What the person who stutters really needs is a prosthesis like Delayed Auditory Feedback (DAF) or the Edinburgh Masker and many of their problems will be solve.
