37 year old male here, been stuttering all my life. The best thing you can do is this quite simple tip, and it goes along with that longer post the other person linked to- Realize that you can stutter easier. You can force yourself to stutter outwardly and openly and gently. Instead of blocking, try purposely repeating sounds. Yes, on purpose. Make people notice that you stutter, but do it in this open, easy way. Maintain eye contact while doing it. OWN your stutter. Yes you will still stutter but you will have much less fear, anxiety, tension, tiredness, etc. I know it is a tough task and it took me about 15 years to really understand this with the help of a good speech therapist. Next time you are speaking and you come to a word that you are afraid you are going to stutter on, stutter on it on purpose but maintaining control. The more you do it, the easier it gets. This will help with the mental health issues, as weird as it may seem. You have to trust that this works, and it doesn’t work immediately but what it does is reduce the fear you have of stuttering in your mind. Hope that helps. One thing I can say is that as you get older and into more of an adult, your confidence in yourself will grow. Yes I still stutter but it’s been a long, long time since anyone has reacted negatively to my face.
