Changing my name - I think it will significantly help my social skills in spite of my stutter I have been a stutterer since I was about 5 years old. Not sure how I got it - I might have been mimicking an uncle who had a slight stammer or it might be due to the fact that my parents changed my handedness from left to right when I was about that age. There was a research that said forcefully changing handedness in kids sometimes this triggers stammering. Anyhow, 30 years later, I still stutter and even though the intensity of my stutter has improved to a degree where I can have short conversations where I don't block at all. One situation where I almost always stutter is when I say my name. I stutter mostly on plosive sounds (sounds that are formed by completely stopping airflow - /t /k /p etc) This causes me to avoid many social situations where I meet people and I have to introduce myself. I suspect that I am the introvert I am today partly because of this. So last week, I took the decision to go through a legal name change - to a one syllable first name that I almost never block. Just taking this decision has been empowering and refreshing. I suddenly feel that I can go out there and meet people. I feel good about the idea of introducing myself. I imagine that this will just help me create more examples of stutter-less conversations which will further improve my fluency in the long run.
