There is a reason, a very good reason. It lets them know before hand, so they know what to expect. it can be hard for people, if its the first time they have ever spoken to someone with a stammer, sometimes they dont know how to react. I get that there is a personal pride element, but ultimately it does no harm to let someone know before hand.
