To treat something is to, “behave toward or deal with in a certain way”. In speech therapy we develop treatment plans or therapy plans for clients depending on the disorder. When working with a person who stutters it is the goal to address the physical stuttering as well as the social/emotional aspect of stuttering. A person who stutters may exhibit avoidance behaviors due to being anxious about stuttering, or have a negative attitude toward verbal comminution. In this case, many treatment plans for people who stutter are developed with mindfulness and avoidance reduction in mind. This does not cure stuttering, but it may help decrease anxiety and increase a person’s willingness to use the speaking strategies learned in therapy, etc. Also if a person is comfortable with their stuttering and it is not holding them back from anything, they no longer need therapy.
