I’ve talked a fair bit about anxiety, especially social anxiety, with my speech therapist. She told me that about 50% of stutterers develop some social anxiety, some more than others. To address this, she has instructed me to begin meditating. This gives me a more calm attitude and makes my mind centered in the present. It also makes me more focused on my breathing, which is, at least I think, key to a more fluid speech. Meditation with ‘body scanning’, i.e. a session where you concentrate for a couple of seconds on each body part makes me more aware of my body and how I react to stuff in a more observing way. I really think it have helped, although I’ve only been doing it for a couple of weeks now. I can definitely recommend it. Over the years, I’ve developed quite the social anxiety myself but I’ve really grown tired of it. I started speech therapy about a month ago, and I’m really liking it so far.
