In my experience, because people are jerks and it feels that way after so many years of being picked on. It’s not necessary, and it’s hard to not feel like you have to hide it or apologize. Don’t, just be yourself and try not to beat yourself up when you stutter and if someone is being a jerk, tell them and/or walk away.
